African, Queer, and Exiled: Narratives from Ugandans

Internationales Begegnungszentrum (IBZ), Emil-Figge-Str. 59, 44227 Dortmund, November 15, 2023

Who will bring a flower to your grave?
Who misses dead foreign queers?
Who mourns foreigners…
let alone gay foreigners?
Who grieves for exiled queers?
Who honours dead queer aliens?

With this poem, I immortalise dead queer refugees.
Stella Nyanzi

Stella Nyanzi is a multiple award-winning knowledge producer and current scholarship-holder of the Writers-in-Exile program of PEN Zentrum Deutschland. Nyanzi was sentenced to 18 months in a maximum security prison because of a poem in which she criticises the president of Uganda. Her activism spans women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, labour rights, free expression and academic freedom, digital democracy, and civil and political rights – in Uganda and Africa more broadly.

The scholar, social justice activist, politician, and poet will read from her published poetry collections and give a talk about her experiences as an African, queer, and exiled person.
