Fellows

Academy in Exile is based on a model that brings together multidisciplinary cohorts of scholars around unified themes, with the aim of enabling persecuted scholars to collaborate with one another and resume their work in Germany. Currently, Academy in Exile supports 19 scholars with either long-term fellowships (24 months) or short-term emergency stipends (three to six months). During their fellowships, fellows conduct independent research, participate in professional development workshops and colloquia, give conference presentations, publish, co-develop tandem teaching courses, co-organise symposia and conferences, and participate in other activities, while receiving intensive support from the team.

In response to the growing needs of scholars at risk, Academy in Exile was founded in 2017. The initial fellowships were awarded to scholars from Turkey on the basis of applicants’ academic merit and risk status. With the program in its eighth year, AiE fellowships are now available to scholars from all over the world.
